In a swoop on the activists of Madiga Reservation Porta Samithi (MRPS) which gave a call for Kurukshetram to press for their demand for classification of SCs, police arrested at least 40 persons in the district on Wednesday.

The MRPS had been mobilizing its cadre to attend the meeting in Hyderabad where the AICC plenary session is scheduled to take place on January 21.

The MRPS chief Manda Krishna Madiga announced that their activists would lay siege to Hyderabad city if an announcement by Congress was not made before plenary.

As part of National Manuscript Mission 2003, a survey on manuscripts and palm leave scripts will be conducted in Srikakulam district from February 20 to 25. The survey will include manuscripts, creative writings, documents and others connected with the important activities in the villages before 1935.

Only details of such manuscripts and documents would be obtained and they would not be taken over by the authorities according to a press release. The public has been requested to furnish any information concerning the above to the Collectorate on Phone 08942-222210.

January 2, 2006

In a major fire accident, nearly 300 thatched houses were reduced to ashes at Chillapeta Rajam village in Ranasthalam mandal on Monday. Initial estimates put the loss at Rs.1 crore. The fire, which broke out when most of the people wee busy in the fields attending to harvest work made nearly 1000 homeless. The District Collector, A Koteswara Rao visited the village and announced relief measures.
